Board of Trustees 2010-2011

The Oakwood Board of Trustees strives to be a diverse entity comprised of individuals who work at being a team and bring to it a variety of different perspectives, balance of skills, and broad thinking. If you or others are interested in being involved with the Board, please consider serving on a Board committee and otherwise submit names of parents and/or non-parents to any Board member or the Committee on Trustees.

Board of Trustee Election Process

Alicia Speight Hawk, President
Alicia Speight Hawk is originally from Greenville. She received her BS in Civil Engineering and MCE in Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University. She is a registered Professional Engineer, previously working in Atlanta and Raleigh as an environmental engineering consultant before returning to Greenville in 2004. Mrs. Hawk is currently the General Manager of Speight Properties, a real estate asset management firm specializing in commercial and residential development, sales, and property management. Mrs. Hawk is one of the original founders and currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Select Bank & Trust Company Board of Directors in Greenville. She also serves on the NCSU Veterinary Medical Foundation, Inc.'s Board of Directors. Alicia is married to Matthew Hawk, a local commercial real estate appraiser with Rasberry Shackelford & Associates of Kinston, and they have two children who both attend Oakwood.

Dallas Clark, Vice President
Dallas Clark Jr., a former Oakwood board member who has agreed to serve the school again, was reared in Greenville, graduated from Wake Forest College in 1965 and from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1968. He then served in the United States Marines until 1971, where he was certified as a military trial counsel and military judge. He was a Captain when released from active duty. After practicing as a criminal defense lawyer in Greensboro, he returned to Greenville and began the practice of law. He is now “of counsel” with the firm of Colombo, Kitchen, Dunn, Ball and Porter. Mr. Clark is certified by the State Bar as a specialist in family law and served as a committee member and chairman of the Family Law Specialization Committee. He was then selected to serve on the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization as a member and Chairman. He has served as a member of the vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a member and Chairman of the Board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Pitt County and as a member and president of the Board of the Greenville Country Club. He and Melanie Clark are the parents of Hannah, an Oakwood "lifer" and a proud member of the Oakwood Class of 2013.

Aurelia Monk, Secretary
Aurelia Monk graduated with a BA from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked in the marketing field for ten years on both the agency and client sides before working on several non-profit boards on a volunteer basis. She is married to William Monk, a former Oakwood Board member. They have been Oakwood parents for ten years.

Andy Culpepper, Treasurer
Andy Culpepper serves on the Finance and Development Committees of Oakwood's Board of Trustees. He is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a BS in Math, and a graduate of the Executive Development Institute at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC. He is a chartered wealth advisor, the owner of Culpepper investment Group, and serves on the boards of The Pitt County Development Commission, Mountain Aircraft Services and Discovery Insurance. Mr. Culpepper is a lifetime eastern North Carolinian and has two grandsons who are Oakwood students.

John Paul Corey
John Paul Corey is a licensed General Contractor and President of East Carolina Construction Company. He and his wife are both Greenville natives and graduates of East Carolina University. They have two children attending the Oakwood School.

Herb Garrison
Herb Garrison is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at East Carolina University, where he has been on the faculty since 1995. He also serves currently as director of the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program and Associate Director of Medical Services for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Dr. Garrison, a native of Charlotte, received his undergraduate, medical and public health degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He trained in emergency medicine at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, completed a fellowship in prehospital emergency medical services at East Carolina University, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at UNC-Chapel Hill. Herb serves on the Board of Trustees of the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation and on the Leadership Council for the Greater Greenville Community Foundation. He is married to J. Lynne Garrison, MD, MPH. Lynne and Herb’s two children are enrolled in The Oakwood School.

Anne Jenkins
Anne Jenkins is Associate Vice Chancellor for Financial Services for East Carolina University. She earned her B.A. degree from Randolph College (formerly Randolph-Macon Woman's College) and her M.B.A from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. Anne served as President of Oakwood's board in 1999-2000. She and her husband Charles are among the founders of Oakwood - their daughter, Kendall, currently a senior at Appalachian State University, was here in the beginning; son, John Thomas is currently in the 11th grade.

Eric Martin
Dr. Eric M. Martin earned a BS in Chemistry from Wake Forest University, a PhD in Chemistry from North Carolina State University, and then an MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He then completed a Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Vanderbilt University where he was Chief Resident, followed by a Fellowship in Neuroradiology at Wake Forest University. He completed training and moved to Greenville in 2000, joining the radiology group Eastern Radiologists, Inc. Eric, a native of Raleigh, NC, and his wife Donna, a native of eastern NC, have two sons and one daughter at The Oakwood School.

Gary Overton
Gary Overton earned his bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from East Carolina University, where he now serves as the Assistant Athletics Director/Internal Affairs. He is responsible for overseeing twelve of ECU's nineteen NCAA Division I Athletic Programs, as well as several support programs within the department.

A 2004 ECU Hall of Fame inductee, Overton was the Pirates Head Baseball Coach from 1984-97 and departed from the bench as the school's all-time winningest Baseball Coach with 427 victories. During his tenure, he guided East Carolina to five NCAA Championship appearances, five Colonial Athletic Association Tournament titles, and four CAA regular season championships. Prior to becoming ECU's head Baseball Coach, Overton served as the Pirate's Assistant Baseball Coach for seven years. Overton was recently selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee and he serves as Chair of the NCAA Division I Baseball Rules Committee. He has also handled annual Regional and Super Regional tournament director duties, as well as committee work during the College World Series for the NCAA since 2004.

Bruce Schroeder
Bruce Schroeder is originally from Queens, New York and he received his BS in biology from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He attended New York University School of Medicine for his MD degree and for residency and fellowship training in diagnostic radiology with a breast imaging sub-specialization. Bruce and his wife, Dr. Sharon Mangan, moved from Manhattan to Greenville in 1996, when he joined Eastern Radiologists and Sharon joined The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Schroeders are one of the original founding families of Oakwood and have two sons, both of whom have attended Oakwood since Kindergarten.

Bill Shelton
William E. Shelton, Ed.D., is President Emeritus of Eastern Michigan University and Regents Professor in Educational Leadership. In 2003, he came to East Carolina University where he served in the positions of Interim Chancellor, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, and Visiting Clinical Professor until his retirment in 2008. He has served on numerous boards and commissions including the National Educational Commission on Time and Learning and the NCAA Presidents Commission. He has also served as an external reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges. Currently he is a consultant with the Association of Governing Boards and a prinicipal of the ICG, LLC. He received his doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Mississippi and his B.S. and M.A. in history from the University of Memphis. Bill and his wife, Paula, have four children and two grandchildren.

Melanie Tedder
Melanie Tedder is originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia but she has spent the past twenty years residing in Greenville. Melanie earned her BA in English from East Carolina University, with a minor in Child Development and Family Relations. She is an active member in her community, serving in her church as a committee member at Jarvis United Methodist Church, a Community Judge at J.H. Rose High School, and has served as a member of various organizations and clubs. Melanie has two children who attend The Oakwood School.

Sangita Tewari
Sangita Tewari graduated with a BS from San Jose State University. She obtained her CPA license and worked for Price Waterhouse for over 10 years in their CA, CT, and PA offices. She is married to Andy Tewari, an anesthesiologist at PCMH. They have two sons in Oakwood's middle school.

Bert Warren, Jr.
After obtaining his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bert served a three-year tour in the US Air Force. He then joined his father in private dental practice, returning to his hometown of Farmville. He is President of the Board of Directors for the Davis Trust, a fund that provides medical assistance to residents in the Farmville area. Bert is active in church and community activities, most recently with Boy Scouting. Bert and his wife, Julie, of Lancashire, England, have two sons attending Oakwood's upper school.

Rob Peterson, ex officio member, Head of School
Rob Peterson has been Head of School at Oakwood since July 2008. He is a native of Buffalo, NY, and received a BA in history from Williams College and a M. Ed. from Fairfield University. Rob has over 35 years of experience working with independent schools beginning with Brunswick School in Greenwich, CT, where he held a variety of positions including Associate Director of Admissions, Director of Admissions, Financial Aid Officer, Director of Development, and Head of Lower School. At St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School in Washington, D.C. he served as Headmaster, and most recently he was Head of School at Berkshire Country Day School in Lenox, Ma. Rob's wife, Gini, is a middle school English teacher at Oakwood. They have two grown children.
