The Southern Bank Foundation and E.E. Ford Foundation Awards $50,000 each to The Oakwood School

Mar 16, 2017

The Oakwood School is delighted to announce that the Southern Bank Foundation has presented a $50,000 grant to the school in support of its Department Chair program. This gift is a matching grant for $50,000 received from the Edward E. Ford Foundation in June 2016. Together, the $100,000 received from these two generous grantors will strengthen Oakwood’s Department Chair program through compensation, training and strategic planning.

Department Chairs of athletics, English, fine arts, foreign language, history, math, and science will receive a yearly stipend and take part in professional development workshops on departmental leadership, as well as best practices and most current teaching and learning strategies for their discrete subject. Chairs also will have additional discretionary funds in their budgets to strengthen their programs in alignment with Oakwood’s mission and strategic plan.

“This is incredibly exciting for Oakwood,” said Head of School Rob Peterson. “Beyond receiving funds that will help Oakwood continue to grow in significant ways, it is extremely gratifying that our school was recognized by two outstanding institutions as a school that achieves its mission and offers its students an outstanding education.”

The E. E. Ford Foundation, based in Brooklyn, NY, is a 60-year-old national foundation whose mission is to "strengthen and support independent schools and to challenge and inspire them to leverage their unique talents, expertise, and resources to advance teaching and learning..." It is the largest dedicated funder of independent schools around the country.

Southern Bank and the Southern Bank Foundation also recognizes and values The Oakwood School and the education offered to its students. Founded in 1996, The Southern Bank Foundation makes charitable gifts and donations to not-for-profit community programs in areas of North Carolina and Virginia served by Southern Bank. In this regard, The Southern Bank Foundation annually supports a large number and variety of charities involved with education, human services and emergency aid.  Founded in 1901, Southern Bank is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern BancShares (N.C.), Inc. With its Corporate Headquarters located in Mount Olive, the Bank has total assets of approximately $2.5 billion and over 60 locations serving North Carolina and Virginia, including 6 offices in the Greenville / Pitt County community. These two grants will go far in furthering the mission of the school: The Oakwood School seeks to instill in its students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world.
