LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
(Mr. Peterson's previous letters are archived on the school's web site, www.theoakwoodschool.org.)

December 17, 2008

Dear Oakwood Families and Friends,
Yesterday I announced the appointments of Sarah Lang and Shanna Frost-Shoemaker to the faculty at Oakwood. The women will be serving as maternity leave substitutes for Erin Scully (music teacher) and Charlie Mosley (fourth grade teacher) respectively. Many of you in the Oakwood community know Sarah as the parent of two boys at Oakwood (Daniel 9th and Ben 6th) and through the Suzuki strings network. Sarah graduated with a BA in music from Furman University before earning a Masters in Music Education from ECU.  Sarah has a Graduate Certificate in Suzuki Pedagogy from ECU as well and most of her work experience has been teaching Suzuki strings to individuals and small groups over the years. Sarah spent last week shadowing Erin in all of her classes before heading to Haiti to do a service project with members from her church. She is very excited to teach in our school setting starting January 5th. Erin and her husband Matt are expecting their first child, a baby girl, in early January. I know I speak for all in the Oakwood community in wishing them all the best in their new adventure. We look forward to Erin returning to teach at Oakwood in the spring.

Shanna is an experienced educator who recently moved to Greenville from New Haven, Michigan, where she taught for two years at the local high school. Prior to teaching in Michigan, Shanna worked for seven years in the Osceola County Public School System in Kissimmee, Florida. In Florida she taught in both the middle and high schools and was honored as “Teacher of the Year.” Shanna has a BA degree from Nova Southeastern University, where she graduated with honors. She comes to us with very strong recommendations from her principal and colleagues. She taught a lesson at Oakwood for our observation team, Pam Hartough, Kelly Riley and Catherine Lust and they were impressed with her strong ability to connect with students and to teach an engaging and interesting lesson. Shanna is working with Charlie and the class this week before the vacation to ensure a smooth transition for Mrs. Mosley’s fourth graders. Charlie and her family are excited to welcome twin daughters into the world in the coming weeks. It will be an exciting time for the Mosleys and we look forward to meeting their new additions in January and to Charlie’s return to Oakwood in the spring.

Please welcome Sarah and Shanna to Oakwood!
