Technology Integration Program

In September 2002, The Oakwood School joined technology pilot program, The Lighthouse Initiative, founded by Apple, Inc. The program was designed to work closely with independent schools that were placing technology in the hands of both faculty and students. These schools pioneered the use of one-to-one laptop learning and wireless campus networking to integrate technology into everyday classroom use.

This is a wonderful educational opportunity for our children, teachers, our community and our school. This mission driven initiative is more than just a laptop program; it represents a paradigm shift in how we educate our children through Oakwood’s hands-on learning processes. The use of this exceptional learning tool strongly supports our educational mission and school culture.

Students in grades K-1 participate in a lab setting that introduces computing education to them. Students in grades 2-3 utilize a mobile laptop lab to begin learning how to explore the internet for research and learning. It also teaches them how to properly handle and care for a laptop. Beginning in Grade 4 the students are required to have an Apple laptop for the rest of their enrollment though graduation.

The Lighthouse Initiative has now evolved into the Coalition of Lighthouse Schools. The coalition is a non-profit organization comprised of schools across the globe, and is committed to providing the technological means to our students so that they may become leaders in the 21st Century. The Oakwood School, as one of the founding members, is committed to bringing new ideas into the classroom to benefit our students.
