Upper School Curriculum The Oakwood School is developing a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum for our Upper School that will prepare our students for success in college and beyond. We have researched best practices at independent schools around the country and selected the elements that fit with our mission and in our context. For example, our decision to place Conceptual Physics at the beginning of our science sequence reflects evidence of success in many other independent schools that have taken this step. In the coordinated study of literature and history, all of our students get ongoing support and lots of practice as they develop their research, analysis and writing skills. Students are pushed to take their knowledge in math and Spanish as far as possible, so that they will be able to apply those skills first in college and then in personal or professional contexts. Through music and studio art classes, we encourage our students not only to appreciate the arts but also to participate in creative activities for the rest of their lives. We firmly believe that our Upper School curriculum—as delivered by our enthusiastic, outstanding teachers—fulfills Oakwood's mission: "… to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world." |
